Long before Billie Holiday sang about the trauma of finding “strange fruit” in the form of black bodies swinging from trees, Jim Crow laws sought to marginalize us. Throughout the segregationist era, we continued to be lynched and denied opportunities because of the color of our skin. So many lives lost…so much wealth stripped away from us. Still, the struggle against racism continued as we fought for Civil Rights and marched on Washington where MLK delivered his iconic “I have A Dream” speech. The struggle for social justice continues today as we fight against biases that allow a police officer to shoot a man in his back seven times, and to kneel on a man’s neck until his life is snuffed out. On and on it goes…
